Letting Go and the New Age

I can count a million memes I’ve seen like this: Just let it go!

Of course the words might be different. The image of the young woman standing on the edge of a pier might be standing on the edge of a cliff or tossing a hat into the air. You know the deal.

Behind every meme is a person’s story. And every person who has ever effectively let something go understands that we will never truly let go. The intensity of emotion lessens, but the ocean can always churn it up again.

If we’ve been graced with true awareness, the churn becomes less problematic with each storm. When some flotsam appears on the surface, letting go means giving it a little wink. Ah, there you are! Run your course and get a little more broken up than you were before.

The Age of Memes has sold us a bad deal. The real work is not to transcend the ocean but to learn how to become a better swimmer.
