We Need Another Word for Love

Most of the time the word “love” means “attachment” or “reliance upon.” It is said in recognition of a welcome convenience. Of respect. Of power. Of sexual desire. Translated into Spanish as “te quiero,” literally, “I want you.”

Lingering at the back of the rack that holds the Valentine’s Day cards there is another meaning. Waiting in absolute patience for us, it’s written in invisible ink. But there’s a time each day when the sun hits it just right. Suddenly we see.

If you’re looking for me to tell you what it says, I can’t. The moment we try to explain, the light disappears.
