One Day You Will Not Be Heartbroken

Though you may have the bitter habit of denying all words of comfort right now, you must hear me on one thing: one day you will not be heartbroken.

On that day, whether tomorrow or a thousand tomorrows from now, you will open your eyes and realize they no longer sting with salt water. You will stretch your arms and realize that your muscles no longer form to the shape of the one that used to hold you.

You will rise up and find that your legs are twitching to run toward life again. You will suddenly remember to tie your shoes in such a way so you no longer stumble over your laces. You will see that your appetite is strong once more (and it always was if you took a bite of that one).

In that sunrise moment you will understand that grief and growth are soulmates. And that pain is not the only way you can learn.

Trust me on this: love does not leave us. It only molds our hearts into new, much wiser forms.

Go on then, live forward with all you’ve gained from the loss. Be proud, because you pried open the sharp bars in your chest, felt what causes even the strongest warriors to quake in fear, and lived to tell the story.
