Let me sit you down.
Let me brew you some tea. And let me spill it all over the living room floor.
Chaos is reigning. Trust is dwindling. And you know it.
I’m not just talking about the way that politics is ripping families apart.
I’m talking about the way that we are losing touch with how to navigate the most basic human need – relationships.
We need each other. Not because it’s nice to have people in our lives, but because we are biologically wired for relationships. It’s how we heal. How we learn. How we grow.
Our ancient ancestors were not making any mistakes when they gathered in villages and towns to share resources and wisdom. They were following the one basic rule for survival that courses through our blood – find a way to find each other.
But we’ve turned away from our nature for the chance to take cheap shots on cable news and dating apps.
It’s bad out there, but it’s far worse when we’re alone.
But look – the sun is on the horizon. And I think we can get out of this.
Not by overlooking the pain of how badly it hurts to lose what we love. It’s by learning how to stay open to love despite knowing that we will inevitably lose it.
It’s not comfortable to crack open the rusty hinges of our hearts. But you’ve lived through worse.
It’s not easy to share the ways you’ve fucked up over and over again. But nothing worthwhile ever comes without the bittersweet taste of challenge.
Let’s make love again. Wildly. Freely. Willingly. On different terms. For different reasons.
Because it can’t be any worse than living and dying without a hand to hold.
