Wits’ End

Here’s a tip: Don’t come to Ayurveda when you are at your wits’ end. In fact, don’t pick up any new health habits at that point, because they are bound to fail you.

They’ll fail you because you’ll put all your hopes into that thing. Perhaps it will earn its place on the pedestal by offering some initial results. But don’t be tricked into thinking that Ayurveda (or whatever you’re putting in your smoothie) is the reason for you feeling better. It is only partially the result of the ghee.

What will come is what always comes when you’re dealing with a body: a shift. The season will change. Your partner will order take-out. You’ll change jobs. And your body will respond, as it is designed to do. Suddenly there you are at another end of your wits, and this time you’re looking for the bully who pushed you here.

Instead, come to it with curiosity (“it” meaning both Ayurveda and the end of your wits). Come wanting to understand this strange, shifting thing called sharira, or “that which is always changing” in Ayurveda’s native language of Sanskrit. Come to it as an exercise in witnessing your own agency to make better choices, and bow before your helplessness to affect much of what happens outside of your skin.

That way you’ll be pleasantly surprised with whatever you find.
